According to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhan Gebreesus, to date, 67 high-income and 92 low-income countries have officially joined the COVAX vaccine initiative. It is expected that 34 more states will sign the agreement in the near future.
The head of the WHO stressed that large investments are needed for the successful implementation of the initiative. The current funding shortfall for this program is $ 35 billion. Hebreesus stressed that the WHO does not call for charity – it is about the survival of the world economy.
He also said that conditions should be created that would allow local communities to effectively protect themselves from the virus, and that new foci of the disease should be constantly monitored, and those infected should be isolated and treated.
What about COVID-19 vaccines?
More than 30 coronavirus vaccines are currently being developed and tested worldwide. Companies have moved to human clinical trials.
Eight vaccines have reached the third, largest stage of clinical trials. These include a vaccine from Oxford University and AstroZeneca, three Chinese vaccines, a vaccine from Moderna (the first to start mass trials in the US) and a vaccine from German manufacturers BioNTech, Fosun Pharma and Pfizer.
The third stage involves testing the vaccine on a large group of people based on the principle of randomization (randomized trial participants), placebo-controlled (efficacy and safety of the vaccine compared to those injected with placebo) and double-blind study (neither test participants nor doctors know). who gets the vaccine and who gets the placebo).
In Russia and China, for example, their vaccines have already been registered, although they have not yet passed the third stage of testing.
