COVID-19 protest. Residents of Madrid are demanding the resignation of the regional government, and doctors at 112 are threatening to strike

Several thousand people demonstrated on Sunday in various neighborhoods in Madrid against neighborhood isolation. The protesters demanded the resignation of regional leader Isabel Diaz Ayuso, who applied quarantine to neighborhoods instead of extending it to the entire region, as demanded by the central government.

The health unions are also at war and are demanding that at least 750 doctors be hired, because the current staff is insufficient.

Rosa and Maribel work at a clinic with 48,000 citizens and arrive home after strenuous shifts.

Medical staff in Madrid also denounce the increasingly poor quality of medical services, the lack of telephone lines for epidemiological investigations and regret that no specialists were brought in when the pandemic was under control.

Juan – local: “Residents of the Vallecas neighborhood feel discriminated against by the Madrid regional government through these selective isolation measures that are unnecessary and ineffective. It is not possible for a district where only 10% of the inhabitants work here to be isolated. It’s useless. On top of that, we feel abandoned by the institutions that are cutting more and more from social services, sanitation, trackers, as well as from public transport or street cleaning. ”

Ángela Hernández – Vice President of the Madrid Medical Association: “I fall asleep when I think about what I could have done in the June pandemic, if I had 1,500 epidemiologists. Now there are probably 800, but 5,000 would not be enough. ”

Maribel Giráldez – family doctor: “We are 15 doctors in the morning, 15 in the afternoon, 5 pediatricians, 22 nurses, 18 support staff and honestly we can’t cope with the huge amount of work every day.”

Rosa Gómez Honrato – Health Centers Platform: “There are nurses who do 100 PCR tests per shift. Patients are called again to be given the results. If a positive appears, we start the investigation again. Finally, a huge job. ”
