The Moscow Department of Health has been accused of failing to report the actual number of deaths caused by COVID-19. In a statement, officials argue that many of the deaths could not be attributed to the coronavirus because patients were facing other terminal illnesses. CNN and Mediafax.

“In some cases, it is impossible to blame the deaths on COVID-19. In more than 60% of cases, deaths were caused by obvious alternative causes, such as heart failure, stage four cancer, leukemia or other incurable diseases, “the statement said. Moscow officials also said all the victims were autopsied to reveal the cause of death and said the figures were accurate.

Moscow recorded a total of 11,846 deaths in April, 20% more than the average of the past 10 years. Russia has recorded 252,245 cases of coronavirus infection and 2,305 deaths. Of the deaths, 639 were reported in Moscow. Moscow authorities say 60% of total deaths cannot be attributed to COVID-19. These patients suffered from other diseases: heart disease, cancer, leukemia or autoimmune diseases.
