Italy has surpassed China in the number of deaths caused by the new coronavirus

The death toll from the new coronavirus in Italy has now surpassed that of China, the BBC reports on Thursday, after authorities on the peninsula announced 427 new deaths in the last 24 hours.

Thus, the total number of deaths in Italy reached 3,405, exceeding the balance announced by the Chinese authorities, of 3,245, being the country from which the virus has spread.

At the same time, 5,322 new cases were confirmed today, the total number being 41,035.

In intensive care there are 2,498 people from all over the country, 1006 being in the Lombardy region alone. This region has recorded only 209 deaths today.

Of the 3,405 dead due to the new coronavirus in Italy, most are in the Lombardy region: 2,168, reports Digi24 correspondent Sergiu Balaban. This region also has the most patients in hospitals: 7,500 and more than 1,000 at resuscitation.

A glimmer of hope among these black numbers: 415 patients were cured on the last day, thus totaling 4,440.

A day ago, in Italy, the worst balance was announced in 24 hours: there were 475 deaths in just one day, a number never reached until now, while the newly confirmed cases amounted to 4,207, again an unwanted record.

Since February 21, over 182,000 tests have been performed in Italy to detect COVID-19.
