In China, a live coronavirus has been found on frozen food packaging for the first time, and a person who comes into contact with such packaging can become infected, according to the website of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Experts found a live coronavirus on a package of imported frozen cod when investigating the cause of a new COVID-19 outbreak in the eastern city of Qingdao.
“The detection of live coronavirus on frozen food packaging in Qingdao is the first time it has been confirmed outside the laboratory that the new coronavirus can persist on packaging for a long time under special conditions,” the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention said.
It added that so far not a single case of coronavirus infection has been reported as a result of contact with frozen foods. The risk of getting infected in this way exists, but it is very low, the CDC noted.
